Rule of acquisition #303

Never leave your bitcoins in third part wallets

Rule of acquisition #303. Source: reddit/r/bitcoin (click image)

Of course, I don’t completely agree. Yes, keep your BTC savings in your own wallet, preferably offline.

But… you will need third party wallets for trading, for now at least. Maybe with multi-signature transactions, you could trade between persons directly, with the exchange as the signing middle-man, keeping account. That would be interesting!

Recreational betting with Bitcoins

August 30, 2012 00:51 / Leave a Comment / Robert-Reinder Nederhoed

People ask me what they could do with bitcoins if they had some. I could come up with serious purposes, like buying stuff online. Tonight I found the betting website Bets of Bitcoin, where you can bet on statements that people made, or post your own.

I like the clean design and the clear concept: either you agree to a bet or you don’t.

The minimal bet of BTC 0.1 is a bit disappointing. Wouldn’t it be fun to be right on something for the price of BTC 0.005 and win 0.012, for example?

Anyway, I put one up myself:

Bitcoin difficulty will be higher than 8000000 on March 1, 2013

My bet is Agree for BTC 0.5. Challenge me!

Search activity on Google related to "bitcoin" and its value

August 28, 2012 20:45 / Leave a Comment / Robert-Reinder Nederhoed

This evening I compared two graphs. Search activity on the term “bitcoin” (Google Trends) and MtGox closing value (Bitcoin Charts) over the years 2011 and 2012.

Google Trends (source)

bitcoin 2011

MtGox closing value (source)

mtgox trading value

Perhaps not surprisingly, these two correlate nicely.

Google Trends offers some context in the form of articles. The spike in june 2011, was a pure hype. In januari of 2012, bitcoin was central in an episode of The good wife. And finally the rising trend in August 2012 seems due to BitInstant’s debit card. They got featured on CNN Money.

Bitcoin Statistics to study

Just ran into an excellent collection of links to statistics on Bitcoin accompanied by a short description. A good starting point for the intermediate bitcoiner.

On an affordable Bitcoin "supercomputer"

August 6, 2012 20:41 / Leave a Comment / Robert-Reinder Nederhoed

So I was toying some months ago with getting 2 GPU’s up and running on an ATX desktop. The resulting computing power was 480 MHash/s while consuming say 500 Watts per hour.

That was child’s play. And not very sensible financially.

The folks at Butterfly Labs are taking bitcoin hardware seriously. First they developed a dedicated device running around 800 MHash/s on 80 Watts per hour. Now they announced a new product line – BitForce SC – that would deliver 40 GHash/s using the same amount of power (source).

That’s magic! And it’s done with an Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC). In other words: a Bitcoin-mining processor with super performance and minimal energy consumation.

The first batch is scheduled for October 2012. I’m seriously considering buying one. The catch: you have to be willing to invest $1300, pay upfront and have faith you’ll be among the lucky ones eligible to receive a unit from the first batch.

Update 2012-08-27: I’ve ordered two SC’s for my Bitcoin investment proposal (dutch). What do you think?

Unlocking your savings from memory

March 12, 2012 21:41 / Leave a Comment / Robert-Reinder Nederhoed

This is interesting: unlocking your bitcoin savings with a memorable secret phrase.

What I still find hard to conceive is: where is my money?

If I understand correctly, the BTC money is in the system, on a unique, private address that can be accessed using a complex private key. The memorable secret phrase is constructed to be translated into that complex private key.

Wow, that would mean “money in the clouds”. Buzzzy!

This would forego the need to have a wallet stored somewhere. Also, no need to backup your wallet.
You do need to have a good memory or store the secret phrase in a safe. Or you might lose your savings.

Correct me if I’m wrong, please.

Geen Google zoekresultaten voor Geenstijl?

May 5, 2011 09:20 / Leave a Comment / Robert-Reinder Nederhoed

Inspirational words from Steve Jobs (2005)

March 12, 2010 08:51 / Leave a Comment / Robert-Reinder Nederhoed

Nothing wrong with some breakfast for thought. Take a few minutes. Sit back. Listen.

Steve Jobs gives a speech to the graduates of Stanford University in 2005.

I’m pretty harsh on Apple’s strategies, and therefore negatively biased towards Steve Jobs. This speech gives it some balance.

Thanks for the link to JP from Reflect7, who wrote an interesting article on why not to base your business solely on the iPhone.

Convert and compress Flip video on Linux with ffmpeg

January 14, 2010 16:19 / Leave a Comment / Robert-Reinder Nederhoed

A quick note to make sure I won’t forget how I did it:
ffmpeg -i hedde-soul_singing.mp4 -acodec mp2 hedde-soul_singing-compressed.mp4

Reduced my 15 second Flip UltraHD movie in mp4 format from 13.8 MB to 2 MB.

The results:

FFMPEG compressed (2 MB)

Original (13.8 MB)

Ordering food online: a short adventure

December 13, 2009 12:17 / 1 Comment / Robert-Reinder Nederhoed

Okay, I had decided not to post my experience online, but to give feedback on the customer response form Just-eat provides. But since that didn’t work…

My experience in short:

  • Ordered Japanese food with Zensei (The Hague) using Justeat.nl on Friday (2009-12-11 20:00)
  • No confirmation email
  • No response on the online chat they offer
  • Called the restaurant at 21:10. They said the food was on it’s way.
  • Received the order around 21:30
  • Found out today (Sunday) that a confirmation had been sent, but was delayed by their email servers
  • Tried to give feedback using their website: Server Error

Luckily, my experience with customer feedback forms trained me to copy my input to the clipboard, just in case.

So here’s the feedback I was trying to give (in dutch):

Goedemorgen,

Received: from mailfilter1.sitebytes.nl (62.197.128.40) by nederhoed.com
with SMTP; 11 Dec 2009 21:20:54 +0100
[...]
Received: from relay.armadahosting.com (relay.armadahosting.com
[195.190.153.92]) by mailfilter1.sitebytes.nl (Postfix) with ESMTP id
22A87708073 for ; Fri, 11 Dec 2009 21:20:52 +0100 (CET)
Received: from BI (unknown [217.116.236.111]) by relay.armadahosting.com
(Postfix) with ESMTP id 0A9D36F9672 for ; Fri, 11 Dec
2009 20:27:33 +0100 (CET)

A bit disappointing. It probably has to do with the mail header in the comment. But, hey, what about escaping user input?

Effective use of social media tools

June 28, 2009 20:57 / Leave a Comment / Robert-Reinder Nederhoed

This news item shows how social media tools can be applied to reconstruct dramatic events. It’s an enlightening example of accidental collaboration using mobile phones and services such as Twitter.

Klein Geluk

Evening photoshoot with Margie (and more)

May 22, 2009 23:10 / Leave a Comment / Robert-Reinder Nederhoed

Margie and I went for a walk in the evening sun. We had a mission: try out my new SLR camera. I’m very pleased with the resulting photography. And how I love Flickr! My PC is still busy uploading… we took 300 pictures of which about a hundred passed our judgment.

What do you think?

Restored balance

March 14, 2009 10:49 / Leave a Comment / Robert-Reinder Nederhoed

Okay, I’m almost back. After a few months of too much work and no play, combined with no sporting (painful knee), the revival of a nasty habit (smoking) and hardly any motivation to cook a healthy meal, I seem to have refound a balance.

Two weeks ago I stopped smoking and stopped working long hours. I even took some days off. Today I will be running the 10km CPC in The Hague. As a preparation I have been on a high-protein diet and trained regularly. With results:

last 3 months

last 30 days

Oh I have to leave. The run starts in 2 hours, wish me luck!

Where is my mind?

I just love this song originally by the Pixies. Especially this version, since I also love Placebo.

On Youtube I collect decent versions in a special playlist. In case you’re interested.
